The Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Security and Emergency Consortium, has enabled the pavilion of the Sports City as a temporary shelter for homeless people. The facility, which will be available to those who need it from Wednesday night, has a total of 50 beds that can be expanded depending on future needs.
The president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, has highlighted the importance of having this resource in the face of a health emergency. "We cannot ask the population to lock themselves in their homes and, in the meantime, look the other way pretending to ignore the harsh reality that people in absolute helplessness live with us, without a roof to take shelter under and without the slightest personal care measures at their disposal," he said.

The Minister of Security and Emergencies, Francisco Javier Aparicio, has reported on the services available to people welcomed in these facilities: "We have taken the necessary measures to ensure that they have the three essential meals a day, but we have also created a coordination device with social welfare services that will allow us to take advantage of the contact that will occur during these days to bring them closer to the Cabildo's services. Likewise, an ambulance will be available in case transfers have to be made," the councillor reported.
The president concluded by pointing out the importance of making this new device known among NGOs, the social services of the town councils and their local police forces. "For this new effort of the Cabildo to bear fruit, it is essential that all administrations commit to ensuring that their users attend. On many occasions, the level of vulnerability and cognitive deterioration of homeless people makes them unable to approach the administration and a greater effort is required on our part," he warned.
