The designer Renne Modisto, selected by the Arrecife City Council to give the proclamation of the 2023 Carnival together with other colleagues, has refused to carry out this action, stating that he will not "collaborate or give any light, or shine, or splendor to anything that comes from the Festivals department" of the City Council.
Renne Modisto explained in an interview with La Voz that it would be "an insult" to himself to act as a herald and put aside everything he has been "fighting for years", in relation to a payment that the institution owes him from the Queen's Gala of the year 2015.
"They don't pay me with a proclamation, they pay me by giving me what they owe me from the prizes," says the artist.
A "historical debt"
During the election contest of the Queen of the Carnival of the year 2015, Renne Modisto and other designers obtained the prizes of queen, first and second lady, a payment that, to this day, has not been deposited to them.
"Everyone was paid except us", he explains, "and I think there has been enough time to fix what has already become a historical debt".
In this sense, he clarifies that he is not referring to the payment of the costumes, "because it would be unthinkable", but to the amount that corresponds to them for "the awards obtained, the work done and the effort we put in so that this contest would not be lost".
For this reason, he has rejected the offer to be a herald, since he does not want "them to offer me this recognition and with that, the rest is forgotten".
