To the sound of Celia Cruz and, after years without being held, with the Queen's election Gala. This is how the Arrecife Carnival 2023 will be.

The Councilor for Festivities of the Arrecife City Council, Encarna Páez, has announced in an interview on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that this year "the queens are back", in a festivity that will allow us to "walk through the streets of Cuba without leaving Lanzarote", since its allegory will be dedicated to the singer Celia Cruz.

As a novelty, in addition to the celebration of the Drag Queen Gala, the capital recovers its Carnival Queen contest, where there will be four candidates who will compete for the crown.

Murgas

Regarding the 'murgas', the adult competition will be opened by Las Vacilonas on Monday, February 13, a day in which Los Intoxicados and Las Faltonas will also participate, in that order.

On the second day (Tuesday, February 14), Las Inadaptadas will perform first, then Los Tabletúos and finally, Las Enraladas.

For their part, on the third day (Wednesday, February 15), Los Simplones will take the stage, then Los Titi Roys, and, finally, Desahuciados. In this way, the final will be reserved for Friday, February 17.

Although after the draw there were 10 participating 'murgas', finally Las Infiltradas have dropped out of the competition "for reasons beyond the control of the city council", according to Páez.

For the children's 'murgas' contest, a single phase has been established that will take place on Saturday, February 11, and will feature three groups: Los Intoxicaditos, Los Noveleros and Los Chau Chau.

Another of the changes made this year will have to do with these groups, since they will not only perform during the day of their contest, but each of the children's 'murgas' will open one of the days of the adult competition. "This ensures that the children have more appearances, so that they can enjoy more, both they and their families," Páez detailed.

Announcers and music

Regarding the announcers and the music, the councilor did not want to reveal anything yet, but she did suggest that the former could be some designers, explaining that the position will be occupied by "people who have been participating in the Carnival for many years in a very important way, through clothing, carnival..."

The decision, which has been taken "jointly", will be announced soon by the mayor, Astrid Pérez, as will the musical performances.

For its part, as in previous years, the celebration of the contests and other events will be in the Fairgrounds, which, although Páez also recognizes that "it is not the ideal place", will have a decoration "in which we have recreated ourselves a lot", she concluded.
