The nautical sports groups have decided to suspend the demonstration they had called for next February 11 with which they intended to find a solution to the installation of marine cages for aquaculture on the coast of Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías. From the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife they point out that "after the official permits for its celebration are being processed, said call is canceled".
The Real Club Náutico de Arrecife explains that the decision to cancel the concentration was taken after meeting with the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo. As a result of this meeting, they have decided to join all the actions of public entities, political parties, associations and clubs that are aimed at stopping the installation of marine cages in the area covered by the PROAC in Lanzarote.
From the nautical world they do not conceive this area as the "adequate" for the installation of the cages since it is "a strategic point" for the celebration of national and international competitions that are held annually in Lanzarote. "The approval of the project would mean the loss for Lanzarote of one of its best sports courts and one of the best regatta fields in the world, usually used for major world events", they point out from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife.
"It would mean a significant loss. Not only in terms of sports, it would also affect tourism, our first economic sector, due to the presence in Lanzarote of high-level international athletes and different sports, who compete and train in Lanzarote waters for long seasons, generating significant economic income for the tourism industry (hotels, villas, apartments, restaurants, rent a car, tourist centers, supermarkets...). Sports such as sailing, Latin sailing, canoeing, swimming crossings, scuba diving... Would be affected by the new area to be restricted", they criticize from the Club.
