The Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife has expressed its concern about the possible approval of the new aquaculture facilities off the coast of the island, as it would mean the loss of "one of the best regatta fields in the world" and a "mortal blow" to the rest of nautical sports.

The entity has transmitted that this field has usually been used for "great sports events" at an international level, which would mean "an important loss", not only at a sports level, but also economically, affecting "hotels, restaurants, car rentals, Tourist Centers, supermarkets..."

Likewise, they have detailed that other sports such as Latin sailing, scuba diving, canoeing or swimming would also be affected "by the new area to be restricted".

Possible concession to Yaizatún S.L.

Last Monday, January 30, the Government of the Canary Islands published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) an announcement by which the project presented by Yaizatún, S.L. (company that managed the marine cages) is submitted to public information for the granting of an aquaculture concession that will occupy a sheet of water of 6.6 million square meters (1.4 kilometers wide and a depth of 30 meters) in the Aquaculture Interest Zone of Lanzarote (ZIA LZ 2).

The procedure has not been paralyzed despite the opposition of the Tías City Council, which filed an administrative appeal against the ordering of that strip of coastline, and the opposition expressed by the city councils of San Bartolomé and Arrecife, as well as the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

In this same line, the Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife has called a meeting for tomorrow, Thursday 2, with representatives of clubs or associations of the affected sports, in order to analyze the consequences that this situation could have for the nautical activities that take place on the island.
