The patrol boat 'Grosa', of the Naval Command of the Canary Islands, was docked this weekend in Lanzarote, being able to be visited by the public during Saturday.
The 'Grosa' is the fifth patrol boat, of a series of ten units, built for the Spanish Navy by the National Company Bazán, in San Fernando (Cádiz), in the early 80s. It was launched on December 10, 1980 and delivered to the Navy on September 19, 1981. It owes its name to a small island located in front of the Mar Menor (Murcia).
Its main mission is maritime surveillance to protect national maritime interests, with special attention to the surveillance of fishing, illegal immigration and saving lives in case of shipwreck or accident at sea, as well as providing assistance to fishing vessels and other smaller vessels if necessary.
The commander of the Grosa patrol boat is Lieutenant Commander Salvador Moreno Regil. He is a specialist in Underwater Weapons and has the aptitude of Tactical Action Officer. He joined the Navy in 1995 and has been assigned to the Reina Sofía frigate (2000-2003), the Alerta auxiliary ship (2003-2004), Antonio de Escaño School of Specialties 2004-2005) and the Canarias frigate (2005-2010). He took command of the Grosa Patrol Boat on July 1, 2010.
