Lanzarote prepares for a possible rebound in cases by enabling more floors in the hospital and another tent

The new tent will increase the capacity of the external waiting room that was already enabled days ago, although it is not ruled out having to use it in the future as a field hospital

Although the resources that the Molina Orosa Hospital had enabled in the face of the Covid-19 crisis have so far made it possible to meet the needs, the center is already working to enable new resources in the face of a foreseeable rebound in cases in the coming days.

Initially, before the first positive case was registered on the island, the Hospital had already allocated an entire floor for possible coronavirus admissions, with a total of 28 places. Now, although until this Thursday only 14 of those places were occupied (seven with confirmed cases and another seven awaiting the result of the tests), the Management has already begun to adopt measures to have more beds available in safe conditions.

On the one hand, all patients who are admitted with other pathologies have been transferred to the same floor, in order to free up one more for confirmed or suspected cases of Covid-19, in case it becomes necessary. There is even another reorganization planned in the center, in case a third floor is required.

New tent being installed in the parking lot

In addition, a large tent is also being installed in the hospital's emergency parking lot, to increase the capacity of the external waiting room that was already enabled days ago. That first tent was installed only to provide greater security to patients who continue to come to the center with other pathologies, to prevent the waiting from taking place inside the facilities. Now, the new tent has also been installed as a precaution, in case the situation worsens and it is necessary to enable a field hospital later on.

Until Wednesday night, 23 positives had been confirmed in Lanzarote since the beginning of the crisis. Of these, one has already been discharged and two have died, so there were 20 active cases. Half are admitted to the hospital - seven on the ward and three in the UMI - and the other ten have mild symptoms and continue in their homes, with the established isolation measures.
