Jennifer Dieste Muñiz won the first José Saramago Short Story Prize last Thursday, organized by the Tías Secondary Education Institute among all the educational centers on the island. The award ceremony took place at the José Saramago House Museum facilities.

This contest, whose awards were presented coinciding with International Poetry Day, was promoted by the Department of Spanish Language and Literature of the IES Tías, under the coordination of Professor Goretti Eugenio García. Secondary school students participated in the contest.

Jennifer Dieste Muñiz, from IES Blas Cabrera Felipe, was proclaimed the winner of the contest with the story "Nostalgia kills more than any vice." For her part, the young student Magdalena Corujo Guerra, from the Pancho Lasso Art School, took second prize with her narration "The Journey of the Stars." Mónica Suárez Martín, from IES Las Salinas, in Arrecife, managed to be a finalist with the story "Genesis of a Protervo Subconscious."

This event was held in the Saramago library, which was packed with people. Among the attendees were the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, and the island director of Education in Lanzarote, Flor Alonso. Fado music, the timple and the guitar provided the musical note to this event.
