IES Las Maretas participates in the Science and Innovation Fair, which is being held on November 22 and 23 at the Fuerteventura Technology Park, conceived as a point of dissemination and demonstration of the work carried out by the main research centers of the archipelago. During these two days, the mini-fair will feature exhibitions, workshops, talks and activities aimed at the general public, but with special emphasis on the transmission of scientific knowledge to the school public.
IES Las Maretas will make several contributions, including representations of the so-called Lissajaous Curves, corresponding to the superposition of two simple harmonic motions and the 'Dance of pendulums' experiment. It also provides the photographic exhibition of images of the Sun, taken with the solar telescope of the CEP of Lanzarote .
The "most spectacular" contribution of IES Las Maretas is the reproduction of the so-called Menger Cube or Sponge. It is a fractal object more than one and a half meters high, for whose construction more than 70,000 'business card' type cards have been used, dedicating more than five months of intense work. The Education Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has collaborated with the financing of this ambitious project.
The 'Megamenger' project is part of an international challenge, promoted by Queen Mary University of London. IES Las Maretas, and its Department of Mathematics, is the only Secondary Education institute in Spain to overcome this challenge, an honor it shares with universities as important as the University of Cambridge, MIT of the United States, the University of Bath, etc. The educational center of Lanzarote has also developed the previous phase of Ciberlandia, whose final phase will also be held at IES Las Maretas next Tuesday, November 27.
