Fishermen from La Santa are participating these days in experimental shrimp fishing in the deep waters of Corralejo.
The pilot action 'Experimental fishing with selective specialized pots for deep-sea crustaceans in the Fuerteventura fishing ground. Commercialization test and market study' which began on the 15th and will run until November 20, is financed by the General Directorate of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, and develops a demonstration and transfer of knowledge and technology to the artisanal fleet of the Fishermen's Association of Corralejo, promoter of the project, including a market study.
The M/P 'Daniel y Catalina', based in La Santa, has traveled to Corralejo to carry out these works, under the direction of fisheries biologists specialized in this matter and receiving, as observers on board in shifts, a dozen sailors from Corralejo, El Cotillo and Puerto del Rosario.
The seafood is being caught throughout the week in waters of Corralejo between 250 and 900 meters deep, using innovative selective shellfish fishing gear, sustainable and respectful of the marine ecosystem.

The soldier shrimp catches (“Corralejo shrimp”) will be used to promote this innovative product in restaurants in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, using an organoleptic and commercial valuation survey for market research. On Friday the 20th, a promotion-tasting event will be held at the La Lonja del Puerto restaurant in Corralejo, while the promotion of the product in Lanzarote will be carried out by the processing-distribution company Inver Pescatron Lanzarote.
The scientific coordination of the project is carried out by the Canarian Foundation Science and Technology Park of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the collaboration of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography.
