The Torrelavega Society hosted the inauguration of the exhibition "The Lit Memory" this Thursday. An exhibition that Endesa is taking to the corners of the archipelago, with Lanzarote being the second place where it lands, after passing through Gran Canaria.

The event was attended by, among others, Manuel Fajardo Feo, mayor of Arrecife, Joaquín Caraballo, vice president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote; María Dolores Luzardo, insular director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote; Edmundo de la Hoz, president of the Torrelavega Society; and Manuel Rodríguez, delegate of Endesa in Lanzarote.

Manuel Rodríguez was in charge of welcoming all those present. In addition to political figures, workers from the former Unelco, now Endesa, attended the inauguration, who did not want to miss the event, which served to reunite them with some of their colleagues and remember the anecdotes experienced over the years.

The exhibition consists of 40 pieces, including photographs and historical pieces from the electricity sector in the Canary Islands, as well as a timeline that traces the evolution by dates of the sector from 1893 to 1999, explanatory panels of the activity and the poem "To a light bulb" (1928), by Pedro García Cabrera from La Gomera, to whom the Government of the Canary Islands has dedicated the Year of Letters this year.

"The Lit Memory" is adapted in each of the islands with specific material from the place. Thus, this exhibition has around 15 pieces from Lanzarote that have not been publicly exhibited until now. In addition, a panel dedicated to this island has been created with photographs showing the arrival in Lanzarote of machinery for installations related to the electricity supply, photos of workers and unpublished images of the Nuestra Señora de la Luz floating power plant, which remained on the island between 1974 and 1981.

Parallel activities

In addition, "The Lit Memory" plans to hold the following parallel activities, all at 8:30 p.m. and at the Torrelavega Society. On Thursday, May 24, it will hold the informative conference "Endesa before the liberalized market: a new way of understanding energy", by the commercial management of Endesa in the Canary Islands. On the other hand, on Thursday, May 31, it will hold a round table on electricity in Lanzarote with the presence of historical workers from the electricity companies on the island. And on Wednesday, June 20, it will close the activity with a closing concert organized by the Torrelavega Society.

The Lit Memory is an initiative of the Communication Department of Endesa in the Canary Islands, which has the participation of the Endesa Foundation. In 2010, it called on employees of this company to recover historical material from the seven islands. In the three months that the call was open, it recovered 2,297 materials contributed by more than 70 employees. Since then, the project has remained open to attend to contributions that wanted to join after the deadline. Thus, it has reached a total of 2,453 recovered materials. It is currently managing with the Endesa Foundation the cataloging of new materials from Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

"The Lit Memory" can be seen until June 20, between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., every day of the week, including weekends.
