Canary Islands records warmest December since 1961

The Canary Islands has just said goodbye to the warmest December since 1961, according to the regional delegation of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) on social networks.

December 2022 was "extremely warm", with an anomaly of 1.7 degrees Celsius above the average for the reference period from 1981 to 2000.

As for rainfall, it was a dry month, with an accumulation of 48 millimeters on average, which is equivalent to 75% of the average expected rainfall.

Aemet emphasizes that the rainfall presented "a marked difference" between the two provinces: in Las Palmas there was a total rainfall of 20.4 millimeters, which implies a dry character, and in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 81.7 millimeters, equivalent to a normal character.

The current hydrological year, which began on October 1, 2022, currently has a very dry character, with an accumulated rainfall of 61.4 millimeters, which corresponds to 44% of the expected value.

In the province of Las Palmas the total rainfall is 30.5 millimeters, the seventh worst value since 1961, and in that of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 98.5 millimeters, the eleventh driest in the historical series.
