The Councilor for the Environment of the Arrecife City Council, Rafael Juan González, was informed this Monday morning by a team of researchers from the University of La Laguna (Tenerife) of the location of "a large meadow of Zostera noltii", an aquatic plant that lives in very salty waters, on El Reducto beach.
The phanerogam, one of the three species located in the Canary Islands, is only found in Arrecife, and was considered extinct in 2000 by the scientific community.
Although in 2004 a small population was located between the bridges of the Castle of San Gabriel, its small size and poor quality made its conservation difficult. For this reason, the discovery of this new meadow can be considered "a first-rate scientific event", according to the City Council.
The Professor of Plant Biology at the University of La Laguna, María Candelaria Gil, will inform the media about these issues this Tuesday.
