Red Cross provided first aid training to more than 700 people on the island during 2005. In most cases it was through talks and workshops that the organization develops in the educational centers of Lanzarote, although also in the three editions of the First Aid course that the NGO developed last year.

With these initiatives, the organization intends to "get to the students a message of prevention and some simple guidelines for action", says Luis Carrasco, a volunteer teacher in the department that manages the institution's training. As these talks and workshops are simple and short, they do not delve into the protocols for attending to victims.

The guidelines that the Red Cross explains in the first aid courses are summarized in the acronym P.A.S: Protect, Alert and Help. "This rule is intended to explain that in the event of an accident, before helping the victims and even before alerting the emergency services, the area, the victims and oneself must be protected to reduce the risk of over-accident", adds Carrasco.

During this year, the Red Cross has continued to train people from Lanzarote on first aid techniques, as they believe that this type of initiative reinforces what they call "the care chain", which consists of offering information on the protocols for action in the event of an emergency, since at any time you can witness an accident and, therefore, try to provide help.

The Red Cross not only puts these courses, talks and workshops into operation in Lanzarote, but the training facet of the organization extends globally. In this way, more than three million Europeans participate in these activities each year.
