Three midwives from the Lanzarote Health Area, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, have received the first prize for the best oral communication at the 'XXI National Congress of the Federation of Associations of Midwives of Spain' and the 'II Congress of the Associaci&oacute Balear de Comares'. The scientific meeting brought together more than a thousand midwives in Mallorca to share knowledge and reflect on the future of the profession.

The award-winning oral communication ¿Alguna DUDAX?. Analysis of questions asked in an affective-sexual education intervention led by midwives exposes the results of a project to promote sexual and reproductive health that the Primary Care midwives carried out during the last academic year among adolescent students from the educational centers of Lanzarote.

The work of the professionals Víctor Romero, Yurima Hernández and Samuel García was valued among the more than 400 investigations that were presented during the Congress.

The box of doubts

The project The box of doubts is aimed at third-year ESO students and aims to help resolve the doubts that boys and girls raise to the health professional related to sexual, affective and reproductive health and offer a safe and respectful space where they can reflect and express themselves.

The students formulate their questions or doubts on a form that they deposit in the box, this guarantees that they are anonymous, and facilitates expression and communication between the students and the health professional. Throughout the past year, 23 interventions were carried out in eight educational centers in Lanzarote, in which a total of 460 people participated and a total of 596 questions were analyzed.

The topics that aroused the most interest and received the most questions were sexual behavior and response, pregnancy and pregnancy prevention, sexual anatomy and physiology, reproduction, how to recognize and reduce the risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and sexual relations, sexuality and sexual life cycle. In addition, the students also asked questions about other issues such as the use and types of condoms, the male reproductive system and masturbation.

The midwives who have carried out this project conclude that the results of the same and the questions asked by the adolescent population can be useful for the design and planning of future interventions and health programs, so that the areas where people belonging to this age group usually have the most doubts and concerns are taken into account.

The project 'The box of doubts' will continue in the educational centers of Lanzarote and La Graciosa throughout the current academic year within the context of the 'Encajando Program', a Sexual, Affective and Reproductive Health Education Program.
