Molina Orosa Hospital opens new digestive system testing room

An opening that expands to four the spaces dedicated to performing endoscopies and other diagnostic tests of the digestive system

Molina Orosa Hospital has opened a new digestive system testing room. The director of the Canary Islands Health Service, Carlos Díaz, visited this Wednesday, July 17, the space prepared to perform the technique of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a complex and advanced procedure to diagnose and treat diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas.

During his visit, the director of the SCS was accompanied by the general secretary of the SCS, María Jesús López Neira, the general directors of Assistance Programs and Human Resources, Antonia María Pérez and José Ángel González, respectively, the director of the Lanzarote Health Area, Esther Machín, the manager of the Health Services of the island, Pablo Eguia, members of the management team of Molina Orosa and the head of the Digestive System section of the center, Rubén Berenguer.

The opening of this new room improves the functional testing area and expands to four the spaces dedicated to performing endoscopies and other diagnostic and therapeutic tests of the digestive system, which will allow increasing the number of procedures performed so far.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure that combines endoscopy and the exaradiological examination gastrointestinal of the upper digestive system to diagnose and treat pathologies of the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. Its therapeutic purpose is decisive in the elimination of gallstones, the treatment of stenosis, the placement of prostheses or gastrointestinal stents, colon or esophagus and to solve problems such as jaundice, as well as in cancer treatment.

Equipment

The lead lining and insulation of the new room has involved an investment of 82,382 euros and has been carried out by the staff of the Engineering and Maintenance Service of the Lanzarote Health Management.

The room also has state-of-the-art equipment with a radiotransparent surgical table, operating room arch and endoscopy tower, as well as a wide range of endoscopic instruments, such as extraction balloons, catheters, guides, dilation balloons, prostheses, etc., in order to guarantee the best clinical results and minimize the risk of the intervention for patients.

During the visit, Carlos Díaz pointed out the SCS's commitment to advanced and cutting-edge treatments, such as the one provided by this new room at the Molina Orosa Hospital, which directly impacts a better quality of life for patients.

Digestive System Team

The Digestive System team of Molina Orosa is currently made up of eight specialist doctors, six nurses and six nursing assistants who carry out their work between the hospitalization floor, outpatient consultations and functional tests.

The head of section, Rubén Berenguer, highlights the good work of this team of professionals and their care activity. During the year 2023, digestive specialists attended 9,734 consultations at Molina Orosa, and up to the month of June of this year they have attended a total of 3,995.

Likewise, he highlights the work in functional tests. Last year a total of 7,603 digestive tests were performed, while in the first six months of this year a total of 3,889 functional tests have been performed, including 1,903 colonoscopies, 1,490 gastroscopies, 101 echoendoscopies and 49 ERCPs.
