A group of children and young bathers have found a dead black stingray on the Caleta de Famara dock.

The discovery occurred on the afternoon of this past Sunday, when a group of young people playing in the water found the animal's body, picked it up on a surfboard and brought it to the surface of the dock. Meanwhile, dozens of bathers watched the scene.

Everything seems to indicate that it is a baby black stingray (taeniura grabata), which is a cartilaginous fish, with a semicircular body, a short whip-like tail and a toothed and toxic stinger, which serves as its defense.

This species, which can reach up to 2.5 meters, is one of the largest types of rays in the Canary Islands and is "near threatened", according to the classification of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

This type of animal is found in coastal areas where sandy and muddy bottoms predominate.
