The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Arrecife City Council have jointly organized the first Carnival Gala for Seniors, which will be held this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at the Agramar Carnival Grounds in the capital of the island.
This gala, which has the collaboration of the rest of the municipalities, will be a great opportunity for seniors from all over the island to enjoy the parade of candidates for the carnival queens of each municipality, with their colorful and original fantasies.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, states that, "this act is a special occasion whose main objective is to involve the elderly people of Lanzarote and La Graciosa in a quality leisure and free time offer linked to our traditional Carnival."
The Councilor of the Elderly Area, Nori Machín, highlights that "carnivals are one of the most popular and fun festivals and that is why we wanted the elderly to also enjoy and participate", and defines the gala as "an inclusive event that seeks to bring the entire community together around the celebration of carnival, promoting enjoyment in a festive and safe environment" and invited the entire population to join the event that will be held on Sunday afternoon at the Agramar venue.
For his part, the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan De León, considers "this initiative to unite all the municipalities around the carnival and where the elderly are the protagonists to be very successful. They deserve that we turn to them with this joint event between the Cabildo and the town halls. The protagonists of the gala represent a very combative generation in the families of Lanzarote."
The mayor of the city celebrates that this first edition of the Sovereign Gala of the Carnival of the Elderly is based in Arrecife and on the great stage that we are launching this year to relaunch the celebration of the Lanzarote carnival, coinciding this year 2024 with the 225th anniversary of the founding of the municipality of Arrecife.
"This gala will be a true spectacle. We will have queens from all the municipalities and La Graciosa participating in the Carnival of the capital of the island. It is a great opportunity to make a beautiful, emotional, but at the same time fun event, which is what these parties are all about. We really wanted the elderly to also have their space and their recognition and thanks to this initiative of the Cabildo we have achieved it," added the capital's Councilor for Festivities, Echedey Eugenio.
At the free admission event, you can also enjoy the performances of different carnival groups, including the murga Los Simplones and the comparsas Sur Caliente and Timanfeiros. In addition, the folk artist Charo Reina will delight the public with her talent and charisma, offering an unforgettable show for all those present. To end the festive day, everyone will be able to dance to the rhythm of the Los Jarvac orchestra, a popular Lanzarote group with more than 35 years of experience.
From the Island Council and from the rest of the local corporations, all residents and visitors are encouraged to attend this gala, where they will live a unique and unforgettable experience, as a reflection of what this community of veterans teaches: vitality, joy and a great desire to continue participating actively in the Carnival.
The candidates who will compete for the scepter in this I Gala de Mayores are: Doña Dolores Ribeiro, representing Yaiza; Doña Julia Corujo, from San Bartolomé; Doña Carmen Medina, from Arrecife; Doña Mari Carmen Dorta, representing Haría; Doña María Nieves Hernández, from Teguise; Doña Laly Padura, together with the Island of La Graciosa, and Doña Mariló de León, representing Tinajo.
