The Guanapay Folklore Group celebrates its XXVII Festival and the Canary Islands Coplas Contest

Musical groups, theatrical performances and soloists performed at this event held in the Santo Domingo Convent of the Villa de Teguise

After three years of absence caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, the great family of the Guanapay Folklore Group of Teguise celebrated its XXVII Festival and the Canary Islands Coplas Contest that bears its name in the Santo Domingo convent of La Villa de Teguise. With a lot of work and enthusiasm they had been preparing the content of the same, the contact with the groups for their transfer to Lanzarote, dusting off the archives to rescue some of the forgotten traditions, what recognitions to carry out, which soloists to invite or the repertoire to choose in order to have everything ready always thinking of the public that year after year supports them with their presence encouraging them to continue maintaining the legacy.

The festival began with the performance of the Chisaje Folklore Group, which came from the island of Tenerife, founded in 2002, and currently has about 35 members directed in the musical part by Jesús Robles and the dance corps directed by Tanausú Pérez. Chisaje began its performance interpreting, Santo Domingo, Tanganillo and Tajaraste continuing with the most representative songs and dances of the island of Tenerife.

Next, a video was shown where a representation of the Esperanza Spínola theater group staged the history of the so-called Casa Cuna of Teguise, a space now used as a municipal theater. Immediately afterwards, the members of the great Guanapay family, organizer of the festival, took to the stage, beginning their performance with the so-called "Isa al Emigrante", continuing with Folías and el Pique, popularly known as the Baile de la Cinta, taking a short break to carry out the "Recognition to Volunteering", Red Cross, Emerlan and Civil Protection of Teguise for the altruistic delivery carried out during Covid 19 where they were available to citizens 24 hours a day.

Guanapay continued with its performance counting on this occasion with the young invited soloists, Alejandro Machín and Elieser Betancort who were highly applauded by the public in their interventions.

After that, the jury's decision of the Guanapay Canary Islands Coplas Contest was read, the secretary Francisco Hernández, Official Chronicler of Teguise announced the titles and names of the winners: Prize for the best copla "Coplas del Desamor" by the author Cristina Cabrera Davidsson from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. the prize for the best set of coplas "Isa de Lanzarote" by the author Jacob González Marrero from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

With the presentation of awards to the collaborators, the family photo and the musical chords of the Isa Parrandera, the final point was put to a night where music and traditions went hand in hand. The public that packed the two naves of the Santo Domingo convent said goodbye with their applause.

In addition, Guanapay made a posthumous tribute to the companion Gregorio Betancort who died last year.
