The Department of Social Welfare, Immigration and Equality of the Arrecife City Council, managed by Maite Corujo, will celebrate the second edition of El Jardín de Las Voces on December 18, a day aimed at all citizens to take a look at migrations and their management, which will take place at the Arrecife House of Culture, starting at 6:00 p.m.

With El Jardín de Las Voces, it is also intended to commemorate both the International Day of Human Rights (December 10) and the International Migrant Day (December 18), thus joining the different fields of action contemplated by both days.

According to Maite Corujo, "this meeting is more necessary than ever, at a time when armed conflicts are taking place on different continents and, despite the technological and social advances of the 21st century, the most basic rights of human beings continue to be violated."

Given the social, demographic and urban evolution of our city, crossed by the global economy, we must highlight the value of the people themselves. Arrecife is a diverse city, with more than 100 resident nationalities, almost 39% of its population was born in another part of the planet.

"We are not facing a crisis, we are facing a permanent reality, so our role is to analyze the different migrations, make the reality visible and look for strategies for real coexistence," says Councilor Maite Corujo.

In this second edition, El Jardín de las Voces will feature a presentation by the prominent Canarian journalist, Nicolás Castellano Flores, specialized in content on migration, cooperation and development, with a career of more than 20 years at Cadena Ser and recognized with numerous awards for humanistic journalism.

Likewise, the General Directorate of Social Services and Immigration of the Government of the Canary Islands joins the dialogue table with Patricia Verstraete Déniz and Alexis Mesa Marrero, responsible for the coordination of the Canarias Convive program, and the presence of Louelia Sid Ahmed Ndiaye will be counted on, activist in the third sector and a reference, legal expert in immigration on the island.

The objective of both the presentation and the round table will be to analyze and shed light on the current situation, in terms of migration, as well as the management proposed by the administrations, and to offer proposals to face the main future challenges that we face from the Canary Islands.
