The Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of the Cabildo de Lanzarote maintain their "firm commitment to innovation" with 'The Hour of Code', a global movement promoted by the non-profit association CODE.ORG that promotes the introduction of programming knowledge in schools and has the support of more than 100 partners, including Google, MSN, Yahoo, Disney or Apple.

The main objective of this initiative, according to the CACT, is to "spread programming as part of the basic education of the youngest, show the fun, beauty and educational potential of programming and robotics, as well as demonstrate that everyone can learn to program and enjoy the experience."

In general terms, 'The Hour of Code' is "a tool that allows acquiring knowledge in programming and helps to conceptualize, solve problems and think logically through the interaction of students with their computer equipment," it is pointed out.

Four sessions

The first session of 'The Hour of Code' will take place on Wednesday, November 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will be composed of 20 students from 4th grade. In it, students will learn to create their first computer program through the theme of Angry Birds & Ice Age, acquiring the basic concepts of computer science with drag and drop programming, repetition loops, conditionals and basic algorithms, among others. All this through a self-directed tutorial with video lessons starring Bill Gates, Marck Zuckenberg or Angry Birds, among others.

The second day, aimed at 20 students from 5th grade, will take place on Thursday, November 29, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. On this occasion, the theme will be Star Wars, where participants will have fun creating a game around the characters of the saga such as BB-8 and R2-D2. On Friday, November 30, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., it will be the turn of Minecraft. Twenty 6th grade students will be able to enter the world of code blocks to get Alex or Steve to participate in an adventure through the world of the popular game.

The fourth and last session will be on Saturday, December 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will bring together all the students participating in the three previous sessions to face a joint challenge. The students will be divided into mixed teams formed by students of all ages with the aim of being able to freely create their own game. To do this, they will have one hour of time, in which they will put into practice all the knowledge acquired. Finally, each team will have ten minutes of presentation in which they can defend their creation and, finally, a winning team will be chosen based on the creativity and quality of the game created.
