Last weekend, the Santo Domingo convent in Teguise hosted the first edition of the 'Lanzarote Early Music Festival', organised by the Aceró cultural association with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and Teguise Town Council.
Luz María Duque and the luthier Paco Dorta have been the two promoters of an idea that had been brewing for some time, aimed at offering a unique musical experience for music lovers, showcasing the work of the only luthier in the Canary Islands in the construction of ancient instruments and promoting the island, offering the island's population and tourism quality leisure and visualising ancient music and expanding knowledge of musical heritage.
On Friday, March 8, 'Women's Day', the festival was inaugurated with a concert by the Argentinian Evangelina Mascardi, the best lute player internationally, who performed the corpus of works for lute by Johann Sebastián Bach and pieces by the virtuoso Silvius Leopold Weiss, with an impeccable technique and moving the audience.
The second concert held on March 9 was given by the Peruvian Juan Carlos de Mulder and the Canarian Carlos Oramas, with the Ars Polyphonica programme. Performing a journey through the Renaissance with works for lute and vihuela, with a repertoire of composers such as Luys de Narváez or Diego Ortiz, among others. Both performers captivated the audience with Renaissance melodies, with a formidable performance and an exemplary interpretive taste.
The scenography designed by Paco Dorta accompanied these interventions, contextualising the era and making a simile with the musical evenings that were held in Teguise in times past. The three performers culminated their interventions receiving the applause of the public.
