Continuing with the events scheduled for the '75th Anniversary' of the Torrelavega Society, last Thursday night concluded the days dedicated to the universal artist from Lanzarote, César Manrique, with a heartwarming and simple act of recognition for two outstanding athletes in the modalities of soccer and handball: José Borges Martín, known as 'Pepote,' and Águeda Batista Cedrés.
José Borges Martín was one of the players who played the most games defending the colors of Torrelavega for more than thirteen consecutive seasons, standing out as the 'Goal Man' of the team, excelling and being the first for his human values. He was the player who received the most offers from clubs of the time, such as U.D. Lanzarote or C.D. Santa Coloma, among others.
But he remained faithful to the colors and shield of his Torrelavega until the end. There is an anecdote that proves it: the day the family had scheduled to celebrate the baptism of his first daughter, Torrelavega faced C.D. Tinajo, so he delegated to his good friend Fredy to represent him at his daughter's baptism so he could play the match, with the bad luck that he did not score any goals in that game.
The secretary of Sociedad Torrelavega, Noemí Arráez, presented him with a commemorative plaque, the president Toñin Ramos gave his wife Carolina Cabrera a bouquet of flowers, and the vice president of the Cabildo, Jacobo Medina, presented him with a commemorative plaque.
Secondly, recognition was given to Águeda Batista Cedrés, the player who was part of the Torrelavega Handball team, becoming the most decorated player to have defended the colors of the white club. Águeda marked a milestone, a before and after, becoming a reference for many girls and young women who began to practice handball. She stood out as League and Cup champion in the highest national category no more and no less than 42 times, defending the shirt of the Spanish National Team.
The board of directors of the Torrelavega Society proposes to request the appropriate administrations that a pavilion bear her name, insisting that "she has more than earned it", citing as an example the recognition carried out by the Cabildo of Lanzarote in 2003 as 'Legend of Sport'.
The president of the Torrelavega Society, Toñín Ramos, presented her with a commemorative plaque, and the mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Yonathan de León, gave her a bouquet of flowers.
The finishing touch to this heartwarming event was provided by the Cultural Musical Group 'El Pavón de Tías', offering a concert with a very varied repertoire with different musical genres, directed by Professor Mel Reyes. The group performed songs of Canarian root intertwined with Latin American ones, a concert that conquered the numerous public that filled the capacity, rewarding each of the songs with resounding applause.
