The woman who was arrested at Lanzarote airport with 515.21 grams of cocaine hidden in her crotch has acknowledged the facts and has accepted a two-year prison sentence for a crime against public health, although she will not go to prison. After reaching an agreement with the Prosecutor's Office, which initially requested a five-year prison sentence, it has been agreed to suspend the execution of the custodial sentence.
The trial was held this Monday in Arrecife by the First Section of the Provincial Court, although it started with a delay. At the time it was scheduled to start, the accused had not appeared in court, her lawyer stating that she was in the Emergency Room of the Hospital. However, the defendant finally appeared and the oral hearing was held in which, after her statement, it was agreed to issue a judgment of conformity.
According to the indictment, the accused arrived at Lanzarote airport on January 12, 2018, on a Ryanair flight from Madrid, "carrying camouflaged in her crotch a plastic bag" containing 515.21 grams of cocaine "for subsequent sale and distribution". According to the Public Prosecutor, the substance had "a purity of 79.27%" and would have reached a value of 55,042.12 euros on the illicit market.
The now convicted woman was in provisional prison for these events from January 13 to 26, 2018, after being arrested by the Civil Guard, who at the time also stated that they had proceeded to arrest another passenger on the same flight, in this case a 59-year-old man, who was also carrying a package with just over half a kilo of cocaine in his crotch.
