The Canary Islands was during the third quarter of this year (from July to September) the second Spanish territory, after the Valencian Community and together with Andalusia, with the highest rate of marital breakups (annulments, separations and divorces), with 5.1 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, according to data released this Wednesday by the Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary.

The first territory with the most marital disputes in the reference period was the Valencian Community with 5.7 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, while the third was the Balearic Islands, with five processes per 10,000 inhabitants. The lowest rate between July and September was recorded in the Basque Country: 3.4 cases per 10,000 inhabitants. The national average in the reference period was 4.7 cases per 10,000 inhabitants

However, the comparisons between the second quarter of this year and the third show a clear decrease in marital litigation in the Archipelago: if between April and June 2018 the average number of breakups in the islands was 7.7 per 10,000 inhabitants and the Canary Islands occupied the first national position, in the summer months the average became the second highest in the country, with 5.1 processes per 10,000 inhabitants.

An average of nine breakups per day

In total figures, the judicial bodies of the archipelago computed in the third quarter of 2018 a total of 816 marital breakups, 530 in the province of Las Palmas and 286 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Of these, one was a marriage annulment (in Santa Cruz de Tenerife), 17 non-consensual separations, eight less than in the first quarter of the year; 22 consensual, five more; 475 non-consensual divorces, 262 less; and 581 consensual divorces, 285 less, which means that in the islands an average of nine couples broke up per day, slightly less than half of those that broke up in the second quarter.

By provinces, in the third quarter of 2018 the civil courts of Las Palmas registered 530 marital breakup proceedings (267 consensual divorces, 245 non-consensual divorces, 13 consensual separations and 5 non-consensual) and those of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 286 cases (one marital dissolution, 314 consensual divorces, 230 non-consensual, 9 consensual separations and 12 non-consensual).
