The Prosecutor's Office is asking for eight years in prison for three defendants charged with human trafficking, for which they charged various amounts of money to twenty-nine immigrants to take them with them from Morocco to the Canary coasts. The trial will be held in Arrecife next Tuesday, February 14, before Section VI of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas.
The defendants carried out this action, as explained in its writing by the Public Prosecutor's Office, "knowing that they were violating the rules on entry into the national territory and that once they arrived, they would be in an irregular situation in Spain." In addition to the prison sentence, a special disqualification for the right to passive suffrage is requested for the duration of the sentence and the payment of costs.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, the boat left the coast of Safi (Morocco) for Lanzarote on July 19, 2021, and finally arrived to the northern part of the island, specifically to Playa de la Cantería (Órzola), with the immigrants inside.
One of the defendants was in charge of skippering the boat, being helped in this task by the second defendant. For its part, the third of them was in charge of the organization of the trip, before and during it, maintains the Prosecutor's Office.
The boat, which had about 6 meters in length and 2.5 in beam, lacked any security system, as well as life jackets, food or water, adds the Prosecutor's Office.
