The autonomous community of the Canary Islands registered the highest rate of marital breakdowns in the State during the first quarter of this year: 6.4 cases (between annulments, separations and divorces) per 10,000 inhabitants, one point more than the national average (5.4), according to data released this Wednesday by the Statistics service of the General Council of the Judiciary.
The second community with the highest number of marital breakdowns in the reference period was the Valencian Community with 6.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by Cantabria and Murcia with 6, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia with 5.8, and Andalusia, with 5.7. All of them exceeded the national average.
The lowest rates of the quarter occurred in Madrid, with 4.3 breakups per 10,000 inhabitants, Castilla y León with 4.4, and the Basque Country with 4.7.
A total of 1,380 breakups in the archipelago
According to the statistical data of the Governing Body of the judges, in the Canary Islands a total of 1,380 marital breakups were registered during the first quarter of 2021, 11.7% more than in the same period of the previous year, when 1,235 cases were recorded between annulments, consensual and non-consensual separations and consensual and non-consensual divorces.
The 1,308 marital breakdown processes registered between January and March 2021 correspond to 658 cases in Las Palmas and 722 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In the capital judicial districts (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife) 232 and 158 marital breakups were recorded in the reference period, respectively.
National data
At the State level, the different types of marital dissolution claims filed with the judicial bodies showed uneven behavior during the first quarter of 2021. Thus, while the claims for separation and consensual divorce had an average year-on-year increase of 9.7 percent, non-consensual divorces remained stable and non-consensual separations decreased by 14.4%. If all types of marital dissolution claims are taken into consideration, there was a year-on-year increase of 5.7 percent in the period analyzed.
According to data collected by the Statistics service of the General Council of the Judiciary, between January 1 and March 31, 2021, 15,048 claims for consensual divorce were filed in Spain as a whole; 9,290 claims for non-consensual divorce; 723 for consensual separation and 304 for non-consensual separation. Throughout the quarter, 22 claims for annulment were filed, one less than a year ago.
All claims for modification of measures, both matrimonial and non-matrimonial, increased in the first quarter of 2021, especially the consensual ones, which were at levels much higher than those of the first quarter of last year.
Claims for modification of agreed measures, of which 3,496 were filed, showed a year-on-year increase of 21.4%; claims for modification of non-consensual measures, a total of 8,439, increased by 7.4% compared to the same quarter of 2020.
The modifications of measures of guardianship, custody and alimony of non-marital children agreed, of which 6,456 were filed, had a significant year-on-year increase (34.2%) and the non-consensual ones, 7,006, of 11.5 percent.
