The Cabildo of Lanzarote, in coordination with the island's town councils and taxi sector associations, has approved the activation of "an island-wide Joint Service Zone of an exceptional and temporary nature with the aim of reinforcing taxi services during the Christmas period," coinciding with the dates of greatest influx of residents and visitors.
This extraordinary measure, sealed through dialogue, will allow "optimizing service coverage at times and in places of high demand, always under clear and time-limited rules, guaranteeing service quality and balance between municipalities, as set out in the resolution designed by the Department of Transport and Mobility of the Cabildo de Lanzarote," managed by counselor Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
The island's Joint Service Area will be of a strictly temporary nature, in effect from 09:00 on December 22, 2025, until 15:00 on January 7, 2026, and will be subject to control and inspection by the Cabildo's services, in collaboration with local police forces and security bodies
The resolution sets out the measures that specifically regulate how and when taxis from other municipalities can operate outside their usual area. In this regard, it is established that at César Manrique–Lanzarote Airport, "taxis from other municipalities may pick up passengers when there are queues of passengers that exceed the limits of the pedestrian crossings of Terminal T1. In these cases, the San Bartolomé City Council is authorized to request reinforcements of taxis from other municipalities when necessary".
Furthermore, in specific locations in any municipality where demand cannot be met with local licenses, city councils will be able to request specific reinforcements of taxis from other municipalities.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, recalled that "the taxi is an essential public service and, on such special dates as Christmas, we have the obligation to anticipate and offer real solutions to citizens and to those who visit us".
He also highlighted "the joint work with the city councils and the taxi sector, something that shows that institutional coordination is the best tool to respond to demand peaks without generating conflicts or inequalities between municipalities".
Saint Bartholomew's Request
One of the main new features this year is that, for the first time, the San Bartolomé City Council has formally requested the Cabildo of Lanzarote to activate this exceptional reinforcement of the taxi service during the Christmas period, in response to the additional pressure that occurs at the airport and in the municipal area during these dates.
Councilor Miguel Ángel Jiménez stated that "this reinforcement is the result of dialogue and institutional coordination. This year, moreover, San Bartolomé has taken an important step by requesting this exceptional device for Christmas for the first time, something key to guaranteeing an agile and orderly service at the airport."
Furthermore, Jiménez has made it clear that "the measures in all municipalities are perfectly defined for very specific days and times, which allows us to reinforce the service without distorting the ordinary functioning of the sector."A historic milestone is that, furthermore, "this planning has had the consensus of the seven town halls," states the counselor
