MYND Yaiza, an establishment that opened its doors in Playa Blanca in December 2022, has just received official Biosphere certification after complying with 45 of the 46 global actions that were set as a goal. The hotel has achieved this after developing almost 100 activities in favor of environmental, economic and sociocultural sustainability.

A recognition that the manager Canarian Hospitality considers a key step in its strategic sustainable management plan and that values what, from its first steps, was developed and cemented as the philosophy and guiding spirit of the group, with the motto 'Conscious Lifestyle'. "It is a lifestyle 'based on consciousness' that places the values of sustainability, respect and tolerance at the center of hotel management, applied transversally to all areas of activity carried out by any of our establishments," says Francisco Fernández, CEO of Canarian Hospitality.

In addition, the company celebrates the certification of the second establishment of MYND Hotels, after MYND Adeje, in Tenerife, obtained the distinction at the end of last year.

The director of MYND Yaiza, Crisanto Román Montoya, who has led the hotel's certification project together with the management of the sustainability area, points out that this result is due to the daily work of all the people who work in the establishment and who have been personally involved since its opening in improving and applying good practices, assuming it as their own challenge. "It has served as a motivating process for the team to unite and become aware of the positive impact we can have on the destination. A challenge in which the client also participates and that influences when choosing us," he explains.

Solar panels, LED lighting, elimination of single-use plastics, free water fountains for guests, efficient water use programs, policies in favor of labor parity and social integration, or the use of new technologies are some of the measures that have made the establishment worthy of the award.

Also others such as the development of universal accessibility throughout the building, the consumption of local products and much more, which reflect the focus that directs MYND Yaiza on its path towards reducing the impact on the environment, energy efficiency and the fight against climate change.

MYND Yaiza was also the venue in 2023 for the Canarian Photo Awards, a nature photography contest sponsored by Canarian Hospitality, which included a week of activities, workshops, masterclasses and photographic outings around Lanzarote. "In my opinion, obtaining this certification more than fulfills the goal we had set for ourselves for a first phase and gives us strength to continue with the work we must develop in the future in terms of sustainability and that must be continuous until 2030," adds Crisanto Román. He also emphasizes that "Biosphere is a very useful tool to align efforts, create concern in the teams and internally question processes that must be improved in the sustainability aspect."

Canarian Hospitality and its commitment to sustainability

The effort to protect the environment of the multi-brand operator Canarian Hospitality has been visualized in actions such as 'Don't throw in the towel for the planet' that applies in the eight establishments it currently operates, three of them of the MYND Hotels brand (Adeje, Yaiza and Cotillo), and that promotes energy efficiency and responsible water consumption, awakening the solidarity and awareness of customers not to request the daily washing of these garments.

Initiative that is part of the alliance between Canarian Hospitality and the Foresta Foundation, to protect and recover the native Canarian vegetation, with the donation of 20 cents for each towel that is no longer washed per day in its facilities by decision of its customers.

An initiative that also demonstrates MYND Hotels' commitment not only to the environment and the fight against climate change, but also to the care of what is close, of the society, culture and development of Lanzarote, and the rest of the islands in which it operates.
