The Lanzarote Business Confederation (CEL) has celebrated that, for the first time in more than a decade, Lanzarote has fallen below the threshold of 10,000 unemployed in May, decreasing the interannual unemployment rate by 50%.

During the last month, the island registered 9,855 unemployed, 3.4% less than in April, when 348 fewer people were registered as job seekers. In addition, if compared to the same period of 2021, the figure decreases by 9,642 people, since in May of last year there were a total of 19,497 unemployed.

The president of the CEL, Francisco Martínez, has positively valued the unemployment figures for last month and "even more so in a situation in which a year ago this figure was practically doubled." "Month by month the data continues to improve, although the most interesting thing is to observe the difference between the same months during the previous years in which we were affected by the pandemic, as well as those prior to the health crisis. In this way we can realize that the term recovery is increasingly justified and we are returning with more force than even before Covid," Martínez stressed.

However, the president warned of the need to continue working on employment policies that help employers consolidate the good data in the current labor market, betting on vocational training and the modernization of various fundamental sectors in the island's economy.

The sectors that have decreased unemployment the most in Lanzarote in the last year have been hospitality (-62.4%), construction (-49%) and the primary sector (-47.8%). Apart from numerous sectors grouped in the services category, hospitality continues to be the area with the most unemployed, these being 24% of the total. However, in May 2021 this percentage amounted to 33%, so the recovery of the island's main livelihood is a reality.
