Unemployment fell again in Lanzarote in May to 9,855 people, 3.4% less than in April, when it marked a total of 19,903 unemployed, according to the report of the Canary Islands Employment Observatory collected by the Cabildo Data Center.
This is the best data recorded in the last decade, since in that period it had not been possible to fall below 10,000 unemployed. In addition, if compared with last year, the difference is even greater, since it decreases by 49.5% compared to 2021, when there were a total of 19,497 unemployed people.
It should be noted that all municipalities have experienced a fall compared to the previous month. Specifically, Arrecife is once again the area with the highest unemployment on the island, with 5,092 unemployed. It is followed by Teguise with 1,110 people, managing to overtake the municipality of San Bartolomé, which registers 1,106. For its part, Tías marks a figure of 1,048 and Yaiza of 777 people. Finally, Tinajo and Haría are the places with the least unemployment, with 396 and 326 unemployed respectively.
Likewise, the most affected economic sectors are services, with 4,241 unemployed, followed by hospitality (2,230) and commerce (1,583).
Regarding the profile of the unemployed, of the 9,855 unemployed currently in Lanzarote, 4,158 are men and 5,697 are women, with people over 45 years of age registering the highest unemployment (5,883). It is important to mention that unemployment falls in all age groups, but especially among young people, since they register 18% less unemployment than the previous month.
Canary Islands registers its best data since 2008
With respect to the archipelago as a whole, the number of unemployed registered in public employment offices decreased by 5,239 people in May, that is, 2.63%, standing at 193,742 people.
It is the lowest figure recorded since 2008, since the beginning of the financial crisis 14 years ago.
In addition, the Canary Islands also experiences a considerable drop in year-on-year terms, of 83,675 unemployed, which proportionally translates into a decrease of 30.16%.
