Unemployed people who find work more than 20 kilometers from their home will have free transport for one year, an initiative launched by the Canarian Employment Service, which has enabled new aid for the transport-check project.

According to the Government of the Canary Islands in a statement, the idea behind the initiative is to promote the mobility of Canarian workers, as well as improve the employability of people registered in the Employment Offices, with the payment of their transport to the workplace for one year, provided that the place found is more than twenty kilometers from their home.

For the development of this initiative, the Canarian Executive will sign agreements with the main intercity collective transport companies in the Archipelago, so that they adhere to the project known as transport-check, by which the beneficiaries will be able to make a round trip a day, from their home to the workplace.

The requirements that the beneficiaries of the transport-check must meet, who may only use the discount on working days, are to reside in the Canary Islands and be registered in an Employment Office at least since the month prior to the date of the contract.

In addition, said contract must have a minimum duration of six months, although it may be part-time, as long as it is not less than 50 percent of the full day.

Salary costs

On the other hand, the salary costs, in the case of full-time contracts, must be less than 1,500 euros gross per month, including the part corresponding to the annual extra payments established according to the corresponding Agreement.

In the case of part-time contracts, such quantitative limits will be applied proportionally to the duration of the working day. If all the requirements are met, the beneficiaries will receive a voucher, which they can use in the bus companies with which agreements are reached, up to a maximum period of one year.

This initiative, like the recently published nursery-check, covers the new contracts signed or to be signed between January and November of this year, and both aim to make it as easy as possible for the unemployed registered in the Employment Offices to join the labor market, without the care of small children or the distance to the offered job becoming determining factors when deciding to reject a job offer.
