The tour operator Tui has decided to cancel all its flights from the United Kingdom to Spain, many of them to the Canary and Balearic Islands, starting this Saturday, after the British government decided to impose a two-week quarantine on all travelers from Spain due to the outbreak of covid-19. "We are very disappointed not to have had more time before this announcement," said TUI's UK director, Andrew Flintham, according to Reuters. "Many Britons were going on vacation this weekend," he said.
He also stressed that "we want to know why the quarantine has been issued for an entire country, including the Canary and Balearic Islands, when travel warnings are not yet agreed upon or official."
These cancellations are a major blow to the tourism sector of the Canary Islands, as well as the imposition of other measures against Covid-19 that discourage the influx of foreign travelers. From this Sunday, travelers arriving in the United Kingdom from Spain will have to undergo a fourteen-day quarantine, according to the British public broadcaster BBC. The exclusion from the list, which includes countries such as France, Germany, Estonia or Slovenia - but not Portugal or the United States - means that travelers arriving from Spain will have to lock themselves up for fourteen days in a home in the United Kingdom, facing a fine of up to 1,000 pounds (1,072 euros).
