The Canary Islands was the autonomous community in which car sales fell the most in June, falling by 58.1% compared to the same month of the previous year and totaling 2,537 units, while since January the accumulated decrease is 54.1%, according to data from the manufacturers' associations (Anfac), dealers (Faconauto) and sellers (Ganvam).

In the country as a whole, registrations of passenger cars and SUVs stood at 82,651 units during the past month of June, a 36.7% decrease in the comparison with the 130,513 units delivered in the same month of the previous year and represents a smaller cut compared to the 73% experienced in May.

During the first half of the current year, car deliveries in Spain reached a volume of 339,853 units, which represents a decrease of 50.9% compared to the data for that period of the previous year.

The three organizations indicated that June continues to show "significant drops" in registrations in all segments and channels, despite the fact that it is traditionally one of the "strongest" months of the year.

For this reason, they highlighted the importance of the Renove Plan, which encourages the purchase of cars in exchange for scrapping an old one, to be launched "as soon as possible" and to have a "simple and effective" application.

The Director of Communication of Anfac, Noemi Navas, highlighted the "worrying" data for June and stressed the uncertainty regarding how the situation will evolve in the coming months, while pointing out that the Renove Plan should play a very important role in the recovery of the market, but for this she described its "rapid" entry into force as essential.

"The result for June has once again been catastrophic, due to the strength of the fall. The poor performance of the car rental channel, with tourism still non-existent, has especially punished the final figure for June," said the Director of Communication of Faconauto, Raúl Morales.

For her part, the Director of Communication of Ganvam, Tania Puche, indicated that the activation of the plan to boost demand, announced fifteen days ago, "is what will allow to boost sales paralyzed by confinement and that the market moderates the fall from 45% to approximately 30% in 2020".

All channels fall

By channels, sales to private customers were 44,694 units last month, 11.3% less, and 162,654 units since January, 44.9% less, while in June 28,114 cars were sold in the business channel, 28.2% less, and 120,082 units in the accumulated of the year, 44.1% less.

In addition, in the rental channel 9,483 cars were registered during the past month of June, which represents a fall of 76%, while in the six months the decrease was 68.6%, to 57,117 units.

For its part, the renting channel concentrated 20,700 registrations of passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks and buses during the past month, a 39.1% decrease compared to the same month of 2019, while in the six months this figure fell by 48.3%, to 87,371 units.

On the other hand, gasoline models once again recovered market share in June, to 52.5% of the market, compared to 50.5% recorded in May, while diesel accounted for 29.4% of monthly sales, with 18.1% of alternative vehicles.

During the first six months of the current year, gasoline passenger cars and SUVs represented 53.9% of total deliveries, ahead of diesel, with a 28.2% penetration, and alternative vehicles, with 17.9%.

In June, all market segments experienced falls of more than 10%, with the exception of premium SUVs (-6.9%) and highlighting the 69.6% collapse of large minivans. In the semester, all the falls were greater than 20%, with large minivans at the head (-64.3%).
