The Cabildo denounces that the Canary Islands Government's budgets for 2008 are discriminatory and insensitive to the reality of Lanzarote

After an exhaustive analysis of the document, the councilor Juan Félix Eugenio concludes that the financing of the transferred competences, related to the elderly, minors, immigration or the environment, among others, increases in some cases by barely 2%, a "sum well below the needs and real expenses and the 6'44% defended by the CC-PP Executive".

Even more serious, in his opinion, is that the calculation of the percentage of investments yields a negative balance of 0.23% for 2008, while in 2007 it increased by 13'5%. This represents a reduction of 1,002,315 euros compared to last year and the consequent limitation of the Cabildo's financial possibilities. The total amount that Lanzarote will stop receiving, between investments and current transfers, amounts to 3,597,167.00 euros.

"Regarding the comparison with the budget items for other islands, the difference is such that we cannot help but denounce the breach of the FECAI mandate, which advocates for the equalization of investments in the seven territories," said the economic head of the Cabildo.

In this sense, the councilor wanted to point out the case of La Palma, which will receive 5.09% more from the Government of the Canary Islands than last year, which translates into a budget increase of 3,173,375.00 euros.

Common parliamentary front

Given the aforementioned situation, Eugenio has expressed his intention to send the parliamentarians of all political groups the details of his claims and demands in the face of what he considers to be "politically interested" accounts, in order to join forces for the benefit of the island's society.

Among other arguments, the councilor will defend that Lanzarote receives "not only what it is entitled to by law, by population and by contribution to the regional coffers, but also for the services it provides to citizens and that are the responsibility of regional management." The councilor refers to the School of Tourism, the Conservatory and School of Music, the Network for Attention to Drug Addictions or the Island Hospital, centers for which he will demand a greater contribution from the autonomous government.
