The Cabildo of Lanzarote has put out to tender the supply of wheat seeds for sowing in abandoned agricultural land, thus avoiding a greater erosive impact on the land.
Wheat cultivation contributes large volumes of carbon, which has a positive effect on soil balance and the formation of organic matter. In areas of strong winds and fragile soil structure, wheat sowing has a strong impact on wind erosion control.
The Councilor of the Hunting Area, Samuel Martín, stressed that "with this initiative, while recovering agricultural spaces, it also contributes to the conservation of hunting and protected species on our island, since this action is a source of food and shelter for the different species."
In this way, the Cabildo will buy 30,000 kilograms of non-transgenic armored soft wheat seeds, with an equivalence of 10,000 kg per year. Companies interested in this tender have until June 10 to submit their proposals. The contract will last for three years, with a base budget of 25,956 euros.
