The Global South Forum presents this Friday, November 22nd, its second event of 2024, with a day dedicated to the blue economy in Arrecife. It will be held at 09:30 hours in the assembly hall of the Fishing School and is organized by the Local Development Agency of Arrecife.
With the slogan Venturing in blue, the Blue Economy Forum aims to shed light on the new sector of sustainability focused on the sea. Attendance is free and registration can be done here.
One of the experts is Noelia Hernández, National Geographic explorer, oceanographer and PhD in marine ecology. Her work focuses on protecting and restoring marine habitats in a multi and interdisciplinary way through science, policy advocacy, environmental education and community participation. Currently Noelia leads economic analysis projects on the benefits that the marine environment generates for the local economy. The panel of experts is completed by the Ambassador of the European Climate Pact by the European Commission, María Gálvez.
In addition, Andrés Cedrés Alonso, secretary of the San Ginés Fishermen's Association, tuna boat owner and manager of Optuna, as well as José Valle, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, will be on the panel. The director of the Polytechnic Institute of Maritime Fisheries of the Canary Islands, Carmen Déniz, teacher and expert in marine biology, will also speak.
The event will be inaugurated by Maciot Cabrera, Councilor for Employment of the Arrecife City Council and Telecommunications Engineer by profession. Through the participation of the Employment and Local Development Agency, the capital's consistory certifies its commitment to innovation, sustainability and the recovery of strategic sectors of the island.
The day aims to shed light on a new market, that of sustainability aimed at the sea. And the city of Arrecife has a seafaring history, in which the sea served as sustenance for hundreds of families, although over time this economy disappeared. The initiative is committed to recovering the sea as a source of wealth and job creation on the island, but in a sustainable way.
The Blue Economy Forum has the Lanzarote Media communication group as its main partner, made up of lavozdelanzarote.com, Radio Lanzarote Onda Cero and Onda Cero Islas Orientales.
