The Global South Forum presents its second event of 2024 next Friday, November 22, with a day dedicated to the blue economy in Arrecife. It will be held at 09:30 hours in the assembly hall of the Fishing School.

With the slogan Venturing in blue, the event aims to shed light on the new sector of sustainability focused on the sea. Attendance is free and registration can be done here

The city of Arrecife has a seafaring history, in which the sea served as sustenance for hundreds of families and, with the passage of time, this economy has been disappearing. Recovering the sea as a source of wealth and job creation, but in a sustainable way, is the main focus of this initiative.

The event will feature the participation of the Ambassador of the European Union Climate Pact by the European Commission, María Gálvez. In her extensive career, Gálvez has worked for the universities of California in the United States, the Autonomous University of Baja California (Mexico), Degli Studi of Palermo in Italy. She has also worked with the local action group of the fishing sector of the northwest region of Cádiz, the Campus of International Excellence of the Sea, Ferrovial and the Congress of Deputies of Spain, among others.

It will also feature local speakers such as Carmen Déniz de León, Director of the Polytechnic Institute of Maritime Fisheries FP of the Canary Islands. Teacher and expert in marine biology, she will provide the vision of the training that our capital provides through the well-known Fishing School of Lanzarote and the opportunities she sees in the sector.

The Blue Economy forum will be inaugurated by Maciot Cabrera, Councilor for Employment of the Arrecife City Council and telecommunications engineer by profession. The commitment of the City Council of the island's capital, through the Local Employment and Development Agency, focuses on innovation, sustainability and the recovery of strategic sectors of the island.

Organized by the Local Development Agency of the Arrecife City Council, the forum has the Lanzarote Media group as its main partner, composed of the media lavozdelanzarote.com, Radio Lanzarote Onda Cero and Onda Cero Islas Orientales.
