The General Director of Transport and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, María Fernández, held a meeting with the General Secretary of Sustainable Mobility, Sara Hernández, in which she conveyed "her concern about the lack of progress on the future of public transport in the islands" and has requested the State Government to promote an exclusive decree for the Canary Islands.
In that sense, María Fernández has highlighted that the transport system in the Canary Islands presents unique characteristics that differentiate it from the rest of the autonomous communities. The budgetary treatment and the processing times justify the need for a decree that contemplates these differences. "The free public transport on the islands has a budget item and extended throughout the year, in the rest of Spain it only lasted until the beginning of the summer season. The solution that is put on the table has to provide protection from the 22nd, the day on which this decree has lapsed, until today," Fernández added.
Likewise, the General Director of Transport and Mobility has taken advantage of the meeting to highlight the insufficiency of the budget item of 81 million euros allocated to this measure. "This amount is totally insufficient, since the councils have had to assume a greater expense to guarantee the continuity of the services" and, in this sense, has requested an "update of the economic item and a more efficient management of the resources in this exercise".
