The General Corps of the Canary Police demonstrated on Thursday morning in front of the Presidency building of the regional government, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, to demand more rights and ask for transparency in the selection processes.
About 50 agents of the General Corps participated in the protest under the slogans of 'Transparency, dignity and police work' and 'Enough of arbitrariness, no to affinity police', supported by the General Union of Workers (UGT), the Independent Trade Union and Civil Servants (CSIF), the Trade Union of Basic Commissions (Co.bas) and Intersindical Canaria (IC).
In statements to journalists, the provincial president of CSIF in Las Palmas, Armando Martín, clarified that they are not asking for salary increases, but "optimal conditions", requesting for the autonomous body the rights that "any public employee at the national level" has.
In this regard, he added that the Government of the Canary Islands has "abandoned" this group, assuring that this is the only body in the entire nation that has been "left out" of early retirement and criticizing that the Presidency has not yet started negotiations to carry it out.
Martín also stressed that the selection processes within the corps are done by "dedocracia", without "respecting the constitutional principles of merit, capacity and equality".
The delegate of Intersindical Canaria for the General Corps of the Canary Police, Josué Vera, added that the workers are "second-class public employees", highlighting that the body lacks "rights" and "professionalism", as well as the lack of a professional career.
On the other hand, the delegate of the trade union section Co.Bas Canarias of the Corps of the autonomous police, Abraham Catalina, has stated that two sectoral tables have already been requested from the autonomous government and in both they have received a negative response, despite the fact that "they are obliged to convene them in 10 working days".
Finally, the general secretary of the trade union action of UGT of the Canary Police, Héctor Romero, added that the autonomous body is currently "an affinity structure" where they work by "arbitrariness", with a "policy of the means", and in which the files are used as a "means of coercion".
