The presence of great legends of world sailing, top-level teams and crews and a great success in participation have been the most outstanding notes of the César Manrique Puerto Calero Trophy and the World Cup ORC670 Canary Islands that have ended today, and that give way to the World Championship of the queen class of cruising, the Transpac 52, which begins its journey on October 20.
The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, accompanied by the Minister of Tourism Rita Martín, also did not want to miss the biggest sailing event in the Canary Islands and visited Puerto Calero this afternoon to see the World Cup ORC 670 Canary Islands and the César Manrique Trophy up close.
The Desafío in TP 52, Airis in GP 42, Vindio in ORC670, Pasión x Castellón in ORC 570, Maeña 7 in Open Regata, Horus V in Open Crucero and Sorondongo IV in Open Club are the winners of the César Manrique Puerto Calero Trophy. Pedro Campos' Telefónica has been proclaimed world champion of ORC 670.
In the TP 52 class the Desafío skippered by Paul Cayard was the winner after being the great dominator from the inaugural day. The Transpacs, who are preparing the TP 52 World Championship Canary Islands, have had an excellent test ahead of the summit regatta of the season that will start next Monday. The Desafío, which started on the last day with a good cushion of points, made a seventh, but it was enough to beat Jochen Schuemann's Platoon, which was finally second, while the dance took place in the third position, finally for Riccardo Simoneschi's Audi, after winning the last heat and beating Dean Barker's Bribón by one point. The other Spanish boat in the race, Luis Doreste's TAU Andalucía, finished ninth.
In GP 42 the participants were playing for the César Manrique Puerto Calero Trophy, which in turn was the last scoring event for the Quebramar Cup and the Spanish Championship. On the one hand, Sandro Montefusco's Airis has won the Lanzarote regatta, followed by the other Italian in the fleet, Paolo Cian's Roma, who won the last heat and thus surpassed Laureano Wizner's Desafío. The arrival has been a real photo finish between the top three. It so happened that Roma and Desafío finished tied on points and positions, but the Romans, by winning the last heat, achieved the runner-up, while the Desafío could only be third. Outside the podium and in this order were the Near Miss, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, Madrid, Caser Quum and Bodegas Luis Alegre, the latter, who broke the rudder in the first heat, today returned to the competition in the last race.
After this test, the Desafío is awarded the Quebramar Cup, ahead of Airis and Near Miss. As for the Spanish GP 42 Championship, it has also been headed by the Desafío, followed by the Near Miss and in third place the Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, made up entirely of a Canarian crew.
Pedro Campos' Telefónica has been deservedly proclaimed champion of the World Cup ORC 670 Canary Islands Puerto Calero. The boat from RCN Sanxenxo and RCN Alicante has won by ten points over the Santander Vindio, which has managed to climb one position after making a second and a first in the final day. Jesús Pintos' Navantia, which made two thirds, has also finished third and has not been able to revalidate the world title won in the last two editions.
In the César Manrique Puerto Calero Trophy of ORC 670, which began to score last Thursday, Iñaki Castañer's Vindio has been the champion, followed by Navantia and Telefónica, after a spectacular last day.
In the ORC 570 class, Ernesto Vera's Pasión x Castellón has won without giving any other boat a chance, he has passed through the Canary Islands demonstrating why he is the Spanish Champion. He has won the seven races of the César Manrique Trophy. Second was the Islas Chafiras skippered by Alberto Medina and third was the Vemotor of Oliver Bravo, who finished tied on points with the Cepsa-Tenerife of Augusto Escolar who was fourth.
In the ORC Open groups, in the Regata division the victory finally went to the Tenerife Maeña 7 of Andrés Monjo, who on the last day surpassed the Islas Canarias Puerto Calero skippered by Alejandro Barrera. Third was the Spanish Navy ship Sirius V skippered by Carlos Montenegro.
