Puerto del Arrecife was proclaimed this weekend champion of the Insular League of Latin Sail Barquillos in the 8.55 mt barquillos category. The podium was completed by Volcán de La Corona-Grúas San Ginés, in second position, and Isla de Lanzarote, in third.
The day on Saturday began at 5:00 p.m. with a north wind and 20 knots of force. The regatta field was made up of a windward leeward, with two buoys: the first of them on land, very close to the Insular Center of Nautical Sports of El Cable, and the second, in the high seas. The start was made with the sail raised and heading towards the land buoy. The first to mount the land buoy was Puerto del Arrecife of Manri Rodríguez, followed closely by Isla Graciosa of Echeyde Toledo. In third place was Volcán de la Corona GSG of David Martín, and fourth Isla de Lanzarote, with Alfredo Morales.
This Saturday's race was one of the most competitive of the season, if not the most, as the leading positions changed continuously with each buoy mount, between Isla de Lanzarote, Volcán de la Corona GSG and Puerto del Arrecife. The regatta leader changed up to seven times. Finally, the first place would be taken by Puerto del Arrecife, followed by Isla de Lanzarote and Volcán de la Corona.
Volcán de la Corona's protest against Puerto de Arrecife was dismissed
With this victory for Puerto del Arrecife, plus having put a boat in between Volcán de la Corona, it was proclaimed champion with one regatta to go. However, a last-minute twist left the championship up in the air. Volcán de la Corona GSG filed a protest on Saturday afternoon against Puerto del Arrecife, for an alleged touch on the last buoy of the regatta. Said act, if not penalized on the course, had to proceed to disqualification in that regatta.
Given the situation that had been created, it had to be resolved on Sunday at 9:00 in the morning in a confrontation with the protest committee between the two skippers and their respective witnesses to determine if they were proven facts. Finally, the committee dismissed the protest, as the facts could not be proven. Once this was dismissed, Puerto del Arrecife was proclaimed league champion with one regatta to go. Despite that, all the boats prepared to go to sea for the last time this season.
After 11:00 in the morning on July 9, with a regatta field very similar to the previous day, the start was given with the sail raised. From the beginning of the regatta, Volcán de la Corona GSG took a certain distance over its pursuers; in this case Puerto del Arrecife and Isla Graciosa, who were mounting close to each other. Isla de Lanzarote was somewhat behind, as they suffered a break in the boat's rigging as soon as the starting signal was given, but they were then able to solve it and continue in the regatta.
It was proclaimed seller with two points of difference with the second
On this day Volcán de la Corona was intractable, and as the race progressed, it gained more advantage, especially on the second lap. A total of three laps were necessary to complete the day, and in approximately an hour and a half, Volcán de la Corona GSG passed first through the finish line; followed by Puerto del Arrecife, which on this day was able to celebrate the victory of the league. For its part, the third place for Isla de Lanzarote and fourth Isla Graciosa.
An intense and very competitive weekend, which put the finishing touch to the season of the 8.55 meter category of Latin sailing in Lanzarote. The final classification is as follows: Puerto de Arrecife (9 points), Volcán de la Corona (11), Isla de Lanzarote (15), Isla Graciosa (20), Maramajo (33) and Villa de Teguise (34).
With the league in this category finished, the 5.00 meter category is now warming up. The first contact will be on July 22, on the occasion of the Fiestas del Carmen in Playa Blanca. On Sunday 30, a total of 5 boats will travel as guests to the sister island of Fuerteventura to race in a tribute to Jose Manuel González Perdomo.
