The athletes from Lanzarote brought home the gold medal from the Canary Islands U-19 Badminton Championship. Despite having a fairly young team, the Lanzarote athletes played a prominent role at the individual level, which allowed them to be proclaimed champions of the Canary Islands. These results demonstrate the good moment that badminton is experiencing on the island of Lanzarote.
The Canary Islands U-19 Badminton Championship took place at the Santa Cruz de Ofra Sports Complex in Tenerife and was organized by the Canary Islands Badminton Federation. It was an event that brought together the best athletes in the Canary Islands in this modality.
The Lanzarote team that attended this regional championship was composed of; Alberto Cabrera (under-13), María José Rodríguez, Yanet Barrios and Luis Miguel Fuentes (under-15), Paola Betancort, Rocío Pérez, Kevin Mesa and Tarik Mohamed (under-17) and Alejandro Martín (under-19). All of them belong to the Lanzarote Raqueta Club badminton club and are members of the Lanzarote Badminton Island Technology Center.
It was a young team, from categories below U-19, performing an extraordinary role throughout the competition. In the team competition, they clearly defeated the Fuerteventura team (3-0) in the semi-final round. And in the grand final they won by a tight 3-2 against Tenerife, starring in the great surprise of the Canary Islands Championship. The points were obtained in the mixed doubles, women's doubles and women's singles.
At the individual level, good results were also obtained, reaching two of the five finals. Rocío Pérez Jorge and Paola Betancort won the gold medal in the women's doubles final, in the women's category Paola Betancort won the silver medal and in mixed doubles the pair formed by Paola Betancort and Tarik Mohamed, reached the bronze medal.
