The majority of Lanzarote residents believe that the boom in holiday rentals deteriorates citizen coexistence, causes the expulsion of residents from their neighborhoods, and leads to the loss of tranquility and quality of life. They also add that it increases the cost of living wherever it is implemented and complicates access to permanent rentals. This is according to the Sociobarómetro de Canarias, with data from November 2025.
While it is true that there are more polarized opinions between those who consider that vacation rentals produce precarious jobs (57.8%) and those who consider that they do not (41.8%), and between those who believe that vacation rentals destroy jobs in hotels (58.8%), and those who think they do not (40.9%)Despite the negative aspects, residents on the island of volcanoes also point out that this tourism model distributes benefits better among society and favors areas that do not usually benefit from tourismFurthermore, most people perceive that the vacation rental market helps homes be better maintained and neighborhoods better kept.In the aforementioned survey, the majority of respondents in Lanzarote believe that vacation rentals do not help the economy of "many Canary Island families" nor do they economically revitalize the area in which they are located.
