We have had the honor of receiving, on behalf of the government of San Bartolomé, an award that recognizes us as the most transparent City Council in Lanzarote. The recognition, which is greatly appreciated, is simply a snapshot of work that has been going on for some time and to which there is still a way to go.
But if there is one factor that remains unchanged in this evolution, it is the method, the perseverance, the dedication of the team of workers at the Town Hall, who must be thanked for their effort and dedication to improving municipal management. We are being rewarded for the levels of transparency, but many other things have changed since the PSOE arrived at the Town Hall, after a period of instability that was exhausting for the residents, the business community and the municipal staff.
In 2007, San Bartolomé was in a situation of absolute chaos, both in financial management, with a debt of 14 million euros, and due to the absence of public investment, visible in the unpaved and unlit streets, or a garbage collection service on the ropes. After twelve years of socialist government in the municipality, we can boast of zero debt and an enormous catalog of investments with our own funds for resurfacing, modernization of sports and educational spaces or playgrounds, among others.
We are also proud, why not say it, of the string of lawsuits in our favor, won against public or private entities, such as Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) or CLUSA, for the benefit of our citizens and the municipal coffers. The recognition of Excellence in transparency is, in our opinion, further proof that another way of governing is possible, with the general interest as a flag, without fears or complexes.
But we are not limited to prioritizing electronic communication; in the present legislature we continue to try to advance in personal contact, with biannual neighborhood meetings, of which we have already made the first round.
Investment, management, political courage, transparency, modernity, direct contact and teamwork; these are the axes of the municipal work for this year that begins, to be developed by a new team of councilors, younger, with more training and plenty of encouragement to carry out the most rewarding task in the world: improving the lives of our neighbors. The award-winning transparency policies allow us to see this new management and this joint effort, but they also clearly show that none of this is accidental: San Bartolomé has a method. And it is in plain sight for everyone.
