"The reason for being Canarian with airs of freedom [...] and if they come from outside with the desire to speculate we will continue protesting, they will not silence us [...] this land is our land if it knows how to be respected." Beautiful song, "Por Bandera", by Acatife, which speaks of the reason for being Canarian, which I emphasize with that ideological current such as nationalism.
Nationalism is a social and ideological movement that arose at the end of the 18th century as a response to a series of revolutions that sought to respond to what the different peoples demanded at that time and under that socio-political context. If we place ourselves in time and place, we realize that in the Canary Islands the situation is different. Despite having all the conditions, due to geographical, cultural, political, economic, and other situations; we realize that we do not have a strong, capable, mature, structured nationalist movement, etc. Furthermore, I would dare to say that the concept of nation as a feeling, as a reality, does not exist in the Canaries, and there is an identity feeling that differs greatly from what nationalism refers to.
So, it is logical to ask the question; Why does that feeling of nation not exist in the Canary Islands, if we have all the conditions?
The answer is clear, you only have to look at the state media to realize that being a nationalist is the worst, it is despicable, inappropriate, treacherous, ambitious, unfair. A socio-cultural movement that tends to be demonized, discredited in such a way that they make the Canarian people believe phrases as common as >.
Being a nationalist is not simply the achievement of an independent Canary Islands, outside of Spain, and therefore Europe, and anchored to the third world. Fallacies as common, and as much on everyone's lips as these, are what do not allow Canarian nationalism to grow and develop.
While it is true that when we talk about concepts such as independence or nationalism, the first symptoms of "flu" usually appear, the fears of a radical policy, which usually occur with somewhat extreme policies that usually fight from social nuclei that claim without too much information what they believe is fair. Throughout history, we have lived through times, situations, and even long periods, which have ended up confusing the population a lot, especially when the state apparatus has at its mercy such powerful instruments, with such capacity to mobilize social masses, messages, and even actions, such as the media.
Luckily, we are facing the most prepared generation in our history, the most trained and capable Canarians. Enough of being deceived, of being manipulated, of being instilled with fear. Being a nationalist is defending our land, it is not depending energetically on anyone, it is having the powers of our waters, of our air and sea lines, it is being a responsible, loyal and fair people with ourselves. We do not have to demonstrate against a prospecting, begging Madrid not to do it, because they have a command capacity over us.
The Canary Islands has grown, has passed puberty, adolescence, and has become an adult. It is time for the decisions that affect our future to be made by the Canarians.
Let's dye the Canary Islands with one voice, with one feeling, with ourselves.
