A town that denies its traditions is a town doomed to disappear.
I am a resident of Arrecife, specifically from the Reducto area, and yesterday I witnessed with enormous sadness the death of the capital's carnival, displaced and exiled to the Agramar area.
Dumbfounded, I asked what happened to the carnival on the island, what happened to the joy of the streets in the entire city center, those days when the enthusiasm of many dissolved the sadness of others.
What happened to that big party where our children were born and where we somehow loved to immerse ourselves to laugh with the costumes that make adults and children so happy.
Yesterday we witnessed in ecstasy the death of the capital's carnival through the main streets of the city, leaving the Reducto in absolute silence. Whether it was an “anti-noise platform” some said, or a change of government others said... but the truth is that our traditions have been expelled because certain neighbors are bothered by them.
With all due respect, I do not agree at all with this measure, firstly because people who are bothered by the noise of joy can always take a vacation away from their home, and secondly because those of us who do like the Carnival to continue being a great party and illuminate our lives with its music and color, we do not have to live that mourning that we lived yesterday.
They have killed the carnival and the carnival of so many establishments that were nourished by those days to be able to make money. I don't know whose idea it was but it has been a mistake and just as an anti-noise platform decides for everyone, I have the right to express myself.
Return to Arrecife its great Carnival festivities and its joy of yesteryear, or will the next thing be to destroy Christmas. A horror and bitterness is what we have now in this area, where yesterday there was not a single laugh because of a few who, far from the noise, are looking to annihilate the tradition.
