A year with Midalia

April 22 2018 (19:00 WEST)

Today marks one year since the Canarian Coalition of Lanzarote has a new island leadership. One year since Midalia Machín Tavío was proclaimed, the new Island Secretary. Therefore, I have decided to write these words, as it is a very important event at the organic level within this party. One of the first reasons I will give you is because she is the first female island secretary.

When she stepped forward, the first thing I thought was: I wouldn't want to be in her place.

Do you know why this came to my mind? I didn't think it because she wasn't worthy (because she is, very much so), but because of the weight of her last names. Those who know her know that she has absolutely nothing to do with her father, but I was aware that this was the easy attack: she is the daughter of...

In this year, Midalia Machín has proven to be a brave person, she has earned the leadership of those of us who proclaimed her island secretary a year ago.

She involves us in the different situations and problems that arise. She is a person who always considers all possibilities and who listens to and dialogues with each of the members and supporters.

Undoubtedly, she has always been a party woman, active in her beginnings from the youth side. And she continues to be today, after a year as island secretary of the Canarian Coalition of Lanzarote. A woman who paves the way for all of us who look at her with pride, grateful that, knowing that it was not going to be easy, she took the reins of this organization.

When Midalia Machín's figure is questioned from the outside, I don't think people are aware of the damage that is done to all the people who seek real equality between men and women in this society. The leadership she exercises within this organization is real and she has strived to make it so.

It is curious that, precisely, those people who question the figure of our general secretary are those who, on the one hand, declare themselves progressive and feminist, but on the other hand, affirm, forcefully and without real knowledge, that women are still subordinate.

Female participation is transcendental when it promotes empowerment, which leads to playing a decisive role in determining needs and finding solutions.

I end with a quote from Michelle Bachelet: "If one woman enters politics, the woman changes. If many women enter politics, politics changes."

By Isabel Sosa Corujo, Secretary of Equality of the Canarian Coalition of Lanzarote.
