"Yaiza approved the initiative presented by a hotel of the HL chain in Playa Blanca, which foresees the conditioning of a green area adjacent to an accommodation complex located on the plot of the Montaña Roja Urbanization. It will be a recreational and sports area outdoors, as if it were a small theme park." This is all that the government group of the southern City Council has explained about the project that it approved on July 28 in an extraordinary and urgent plenary session that, according to the opposition, was convened the night before and without giving them access to the information or the alleged technical reports that support it.

In addition, the "brief" information that the Consistory has provided to the media came in the last paragraph of a press release. The title and most of the statement focused on another of the points included in that plenary session, regarding the replacement of the shelters at the bus stops.

Despite the magnitude of the project that this hotel intends to promote, which La Voz de Lanzarote has had access to, and which even contemplates the construction of an aquapark, the Consistory has not given explanations about this initiative, which includes the transfer of land to a private company. In addition, that plot is contemplated as a green area, and the partial plan in which it is located has not even been delivered to the City Council yet.

In fact, the project itself presented by the hotel company indicates that a good part of it would be included in a plot owned by the southern Consistory, in plot number 61, "adjacent to the rest of the land owned by the Apartotel Paradise Island", also of the HL chain. In this same document, the company acknowledges that it is not the first time that the City Council has ceded municipal land to it. Currently, "Paradise Island" has two tennis courts, soccer fields and a mini-golf on the land that, at the time, was ceded to it by the Consistory under the Mayoralty of José Francisco Reyes.

What the HL chain now intends is to intervene in the entire plot, owned by the municipality. In it, it wants to build, among other facilities, a "Cactus Garden", which could have three large cages with all kinds of birds and birds, as well as a river. But, in addition, the company intends to build an aquapark on a second plot that, according to the project, is "owned by the Paradise Island apartotel".

In the brief explanations provided by the Yaiza City Council in its press release, nothing was said about this project involving the transfer of municipal land. However, the call for the plenary session did mention "adopting an agreement with respect to the regulations on assets of local entities".

"Without information"

In addition to all these elements, the opposition also does not understand why this plenary session was convened urgently. Coalición Canaria, for example, voted against the urgency of the plenary session and abstained on this point, as did the PSOE. "We only had twelve hours from the call to the holding of the plenary session. And during that time, the City Council is closed, so we could not analyze papers", indicates the spokesperson for the nationalist formation, Leonardo Rodríguez, who points out that "these are not ways to bring something so important to the plenary session".

In addition, the opposition has other types of misgivings about this project. Although the City Council assures that it has "favorable reports from the Consistory's technicians" and, therefore, gives viability to the initiative, CC affirms that "it only has a report from a municipal architect".

"The only documentation that they provided us, the only one that was seen in the plenary session, the only one that exists, is a report, which is not known whether it is favorable or not, from a municipal architect", indicates Rodríguez. Specifically, this report is limited to reflecting municipal ordinances and, in one of the points, the architect points out that the initiative tries to "improve the sports areas already existing in the sector", so "according to regulations", "the viability in this area is feasible".

The opposition ignores, even, if this project will become a "municipal" park or not". "I don't know, because we don't know anything else. We have not been provided with more information", complains Rodríguez, who insists again that a subject "so important" should not be taken to the plenary session "in a hurry".
