The restoration works of the Tiagua Mill have come to an end after months of work and thanks to the subsidy of 39,000 euros granted to the owner to finance nearly 50 percent of this intervention. The proposal came from the Historical Heritage area, which recalls that this mill is included in the Protection Catalog of the Architectural and Monumental Heritage of Lanzarote and in the Municipal Architectural Catalog of Teguise.

"This is one of the best-preserved heritage assets of the artisanal milling industry currently in Lanzarote. The Tiagua Mill stands out for the quality of its construction, but also for its historical dimension, since this mill, located in the heart of the town of Tiagua, had a great significance in the 19th and 20th centuries, being the milling reference for many families, not only from Tiagua, but also from La Vegueta, Tinajo, Tao, Soo and Muñique", highlight from the Cabildo.

The president, Pedro San Ginés, together with the Councilor of the Heritage Area, Carmen Rosa Márquez, visited the Tiagua Mill this Monday and highlighted "the personal commitment of the owner and the will of the first Corporation to recover one of the most characteristic buildings of cereal production on the Island".

The good conservation of this mill is due to the fact that its operation was prolonged until the mid-twentieth century. Its penultimate restoration dates from 1983, carried out by the master craftsman Domingo Abreut, professor at the School of Arts and Crafts. However, the tropical storm Delta, in 2005, caused significant damage to the blades and the balcony of the mill.

In fact, among the restoration and conservation works carried out now on this property, the replacement of the blades and the manufacture and placement of a new balcony stand out, as well as the wooden doors, the construction of a staircase to access the first floor with original steps and the change of a part of the milling machinery.

"The capacity of the Tiagua mill to grind, beyond its value as a possible industrial exploitation, is an essential dissemination resource so that new generations can understand how this type of building worked on our island, in all its dimensions, both historical, cultural and patrimonial", stressed the president of the Cabildo.
